Why do I need a Tooth Extraction?

12

There are five common reasons for tooth extraction.

Different reasons can be given for tooth extraction. In our dental practice, we see five common reasons for extractions.

1. Tooth Decay

The most common cause of tooth extraction is tooth decay. Many patients who need to remove a tooth due to decay have been avoiding the dentist’s office for years. It usually takes years before tooth decay progresses to the point where a tooth is lost. At its beginning, tooth decay is a problem for the enamel. After the enamel is worn away, the inner part of the tooth (dentin) begins to deteriorate. The tooth is further damaged as the decay consumes the pulp. The bacteria infect the pulp of the tooth when they reach its center. The more time the patient waits before seeking treatment, the worse the infection will be. Our oral surgeons will recommend tooth extraction if the decay is so severe that it can’t be repaired.

If patients have dental cleanings and exams every six months, they can prevent cavities or detect them and treat them with a simple filling.

2. Gum Disease

Untreated gum disease can be just as damaging to teeth as decay. Gum disease can cause degeneration in the ligaments, bone, and gum tissue that supports the teeth. The teeth will become looser as the supporting structures of teeth degenerate. Gum disease can cause teeth to fall out or require tooth extraction along with gum treatment and replacement.

3. Overcrowded Teeth

As part of an orthodontic treatment plan, a tooth extraction can be done. The orthodontist might recommend the extraction of permanent teeth if the teeth of the patient are overcrowded. The remaining teeth can then be pushed into alignment to make them all align flush. Most often, children and teens are the ones who undergo tooth extractions for overcrowded or crooked teeth.

4. Impacted teeth

A tooth that is impacted has either not emerged or only partially emerged beyond the gumline. Tooth impaction can be caused by a number of factors, such as overcrowding or a tooth coming in at an odd angle. Wisdom teeth can become impacted when the jaw cannot accommodate them. Wisdom teeth extraction and tooth removal can be done on impacted teeth for our Phoenix patients.

5. Tooth Breakage

In cases where a broken tooth is near or at the gumline, the visible tooth structure may not be sufficient to attach a restoration like a crown. The tooth may have to be removed in these situations.
