Check out these quick facts to start to understand the scope of who is affected by dental anxiety.
At Smile Avenue – Dental Studio, Wrentham Office, Sedation dentistry offers a relaxing experience akin to a cat nap. With oral sedation, you’re not unconscious but pleasantly “dozing” in a half-awake, half-dream state. Patients often have little or no memory of the treatment, feeling calm and relaxed, yet responsive to instructions. This reduces discomfort post-treatment, as tension can exacerbate it. Vital signs are closely monitored throughout with advanced medical equipment. As awareness of its benefits grows, more people return to the dentist with confidence in prioritizing their oral health.
Oral conscious sedation is an excellent choice for people who fear needles. Oral medication is provided prior to treatment in order to induce a moderate state of sedation. Though oral sedatives do not cause sleep, they usually dull the senses. This means that most patients cannot remember the pain, smells or noises associated with the procedure. Usually, a dose of medication is taken a night prior to the appointment or on the day of the appointment.
Intravenous sedation is a moderate type of sedation. Patients who have previously experienced IV sedation often report feeling like they slept through the entire procedure. Generally, IV sedation is used for shorter treatments. It is administered via direct injection into the bloodstream, which means the effects are immediate. Sometimes patients feel groggy and sleepy when the IV sedatives are withdrawn. This is why it is important to bring a designated driver for the drive home.
The most intense types of sedation utilized in sleep dentistry include deep sedation and general anesthesia. You will be given medication during this sedation, which may render you unconscious or completely asleep throughout the treatment.
Since you’re in a deep sleep while under deep sedation or general anesthesia, you won’t be able to readily wake up until the effects of the medicine wear off or are reversed with medication.
Since this is the strongest type of sedation, it is typically saved for complex dental operations or for people with high dental anxiety levels. During the procedure, a licensed anesthesiologist or dental anesthetist must monitor sedation.
